iSing@RWC

iSing@RWC celebrates the joy of music making with girls from Title 1 schools in Redwood City who love to sing.

During the 2023-24 season, girls  in grades 3, 4, and 5 may enjoy weekly classes at Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School, Henry Ford School, and Hoover Elementary School, September 2023—May 2024.

Classes will take place after school at each of the three participating schools.

About iSing@RWC

We believe that all girls should have access to enriching musical experiences and we want as many girls as possible in the Bay Area to experience the transformative benefits of singing. We recognize that cost and transportation are significant barriers to participation in after school enrichment opportunities like iSing.

To make the iSing experience possible for more girls, we offer our tuition-free choir, iSing@RWC, at Redwood City Title 1 Schools. Title 1 is a federal designation based on the number of students who receive free and reduced cost lunch/breakfast.

The schools that we serve through iSing@RWC do not offer choral programming during or after school. Our after-school program in Redwood City provides a welcoming place of belonging where girls learn new musical skills and discover their individual and collective voices through choral singing.

iSing@RWC features year-round programming led by dedicated educators who engage deeply with participating singers, families, and local community, creating momentum and ways to get more involved. Our teaching team leads our singers throughout the year in a fun-filled, yet rigorous curriculum fostering learning, self expression, creativity, and personal and social growth through song, dance, and play.

Highlights of the 2023–24 season include:

  • Weekly after-school classes for 3rd–5th grade singers who attend Adelante-Selby School, Henry Ford School, and Hoover Elementary School.

  • Classes taught throughout the year by Neighborhood Chorus teacher Hayden King and Teaching Assistant Ella Jackson, both with deep knowledge of iSing’s innovative teaching methods

  • Curriculum and repertoire choices designed to meet the diverse cultural and musical backgrounds of participating singers.

  • Family engagement activities like Family Folk Dance Night and Potluck Dinner.

  • Performance opportunities throughout the year, featuring family-friendly iSing@RWC recitals, a collaboration with well-known, local professional ensemble Cascada de Flores, and the premiere of a newly commissioned piece by Suzzette Ortiz!

Plans for the 2024–25 season and beyond:

  • In the coming years, we’ll expand the program to serve more Title 1 Schools in Redwood City and beyond. We hope to consolidate programs into one neighborhood chorus for large-group, all-Neighborhood Chorus performances

  • Collaborations with professional musicians who reflect the cultural identities of our singers, first performances of newly written music commissioned for iSing@RWC singers to sing.
